Creepy Crawlies

I am frightened of creepy-crawlies. Where we lived, in Northern Cambodia, there were all sorts of creepy crawlies. Lots of times I found insects in the bathroom. It wasn’t even an outside bathroom, mind you. It was inside. I didn’t dare to go in there for quite some time!

There were all sorts of bugs. There were huge rhinoceros beetles that could cling to you with their sharp pincers. There were little insects that flew around after rain, and dropped their wings everywhere. There were also huge grasshoppers, and praying mantises.

One day, I was walking through the house, and trod on a scorpion. Now, I have no idea how it got in. There were some very steep steps in our house, and the house had been closed up for a few days. I had seen the scorpion before, but I had thought it was a squashed bug. Very silly of me! I had forgotten all about it, until I trod on it.

It felt a bit like a sudden bad burn. It hurt badly. A scorpion sting is very dangerous, especially for a child. Mum had a thing that sucks out stings. We used that, only we couldn’t immediately identify the place where I had been stung.

Dad stomped on the scorpion with his shoe. It came to a sudden end, a very sudden end.

Mum rang up a team member who was a doctor. She said to elevate the leg. Mum prayed for me. She slept in the bed with me, in case I had a reaction in the night. What if I had difficulty breathing in the middle of the night? There was no proper medical help in the whole province. Most people have a lot of pain for days after a scorpion sting.

Nothing happened.

I woke up in the night, needing the toilet. The foot just felt a bit tingly. In the morning, it didn’t hurt at all. Dad told me that I would have to wear shoes all the time from now on. I was reluctant.

Mum told me that this would be a good story to tell my friends when I was a teenager. I’m glad it has a happy ending, and that Jesus kept me safe from the scorpion’s sting!
